Get that Strike in Bowling

Thursday, 30. December 2010

Many bowlers aspire to have consistent strikes in bowling but their schedules may not allow them to practice in a bowling alley as frequently as they would like. There are many ways bowlers can practice and improve their performance even if they are away from the bowling lanes. Visualize the performance of consistent strikes that every bowler dreams of making. Here are some helpful tips on how to get the strikes even when not in the lanes.

The home can be a suitable venue to practice in place of the bowling lanes. Find a place in the house where the floor is vinyl, hardwood, tile or any flooring that is similar to the texture of the bowling lanes.

Make a “T” shape using a tape or any marker to mark the place as the starting position. The player may then put his toes on the top of the “T” that he improvised. He will then be able to figure out his ideal step and mark the exact spot where he can make his first step.

He can then proceed practicing by visualizing the bowling action and getting the strike. Repeat the first step several times to become consistent with the move. It is important not to look down at the marker he made each time he takes that step. He should be able to master the exact location of the ideal step he has assigned in the marker. The repetition will allow him to perfect his step.

He may also perform his moves on the imaginary lane that he made. He can do the moves even without a ball or he can improvise with any round object that can roll and has the same weight as a standard bowling ball. He can imagine the lane, focus at the center of the imaginary lane, and think that there are pins standing on it. Practice the backswing and hook techniques by imagining throwing a ball at a specific target.

Practicing at home is a great way to master the skills and get consistent strikes when bowling. Bowling requires focus and imagination and practicing at home using the improvised lane is one good way to stay focused and be imaginative.

Bowling to the Top

In a lane, it’s just the player, the pins and the bowling ball. With proper practice, technique and the right equipment, that may turn into a strike.

Bowling has been around for centuries. It was first introduced in Egypt in 3200 BC. Through the years it has spread worldwide with various ways of playing, either indoor or outdoor.

The most popular type of bowling (often seen on television) is ten pin bowling. The surface for this game was originally made of wood but has changed to other materials that imitate the old flooring.

The one thing that has not changed is the bowling ball. It is not really shaped as a uniform sphere because there are holes drilled in it that are needed for the player to grip the ball before rolling it down the lane

The material used in making the bowling ball has changed. Originally, this was made out of wood. The most common balls now used in bowling alleys are made of hard rubber. They come in different weights so that players of all ages can play this game.

Customized balls are ones made according to the player’s specifications. Custom made balls are for serious bowlers, especially those who are in competitions. They come in different colors and designs. There are also those that are transparent which are painted in a way that makes it appear that there is a figure or an object inside the ball.

A bowling ball can be held in different ways. The first is called the conventional grip where the bowler’s middle and ring fingers are placed into the ball holes up to the second joint. The second is called the finger tip grip. Here, the middle and the ring fingers are placed in the holes up to the first joint. More effort is required by the latter, but it gives the player better control when the ball is released. The third is called the Sarge-Easter Grip. Again the middle and the ring fingers are used but unlike the other two, both fingers occupy one hole which works well with players with high “rev” rates.

The style used to hold and release the bowling ball varies among players. It is best to experiment with the different kinds of grips so that you know which one works best for you.

Bowling is an exciting sport that requires hand and eye coordination similar to basketball or football. Getting the right bowling ball will help the player feel comfortable – a step towards excelling in this game.

Most people bowl to enjoy the game and be with friends. Birthday parties, reunions, etc. are often held in a bowling alley. This can often be a way of having fun and becoming bonded while playing a game.

The attire of a person in a regular game may depend on the type of occasion to which he was invited. The friends he will be with and the venue are important to remember as these may require that players wear the proper clothing, perhaps like that worn in a tournament or league game.

In a regular game with family or friends, a player may want to wear a nice pair of pants and a T-shirt. Rubber soled shoes are allowed in some venues and if there are these shoes available they would be the better choice. Some alleys have flooring on which a person wearing these would have an advantage…

In tournaments were there are standard rules to be followed, it is important that a person be properly dressed according to the rules set by the organization. Most tournaments require their players to wear T-shirts with collars, slack pants, and leather safety shoes.

There are times that organizers provide the clothing with their logos and trademarks displayed on the clothing. There are also big tournaments where the player has his personal sponsors that provide the clothes and other personal bowling equipments that will be used in the tournament.

Organizers can be strict with their requirements, especially on a competitive level where there is much at stake. The mood may be serious and more disciplined in approach than a casual game where one is just having fun with his family or friends.

Other equipment a casual bowler may consider when he bowling is a leather bowling ball bag that for a personal bowling ball. When choosing a bowling ball, he must make certain that the holes of the ball fit his fingers so that he may execute his bowling moves easily and freely. He may want to find the heaviest ball that would work to his advantage in knocking down pins. The comfort of the bowler is essential especially during the spinning and releasing of the ball.
